Amsterdam, do as the locals do..

As a local inhabitant of Amsterdam (that's in The Netherlands, for the people that don't know..) I always see a lot of tourists....in the wrong places.
Most of the people that visit Amsterdam do what everyone is doing; visit the Anne Frank Museum (important but boring), the Van Gogh museum (beautiful, but always long cues) and make a canal cruise (nice, but there are better options which I'll get back to later).
I asked my Amsterdam friends and about their favourite spots or things to do in Amsterdam (and asked myself of course) and here are a few of the answers: 1. The rooftop terrace at Nemo Museum. Nemo is actually a nice museum itself (for kids, but for adults too) but the best part is the rooftop, from where you have a nice view over the city. It's close to central station 2. Go out in 'de Pijp'. This area is a hot spot for a few years already, but you'll never see many tourists. What you do see, is a lot of attractive people. 3. Go to the Noordermarkt on saturday morning. This outdoor market in the middle of the nice area 'Jordaan' is loved by the locals for its good and cheap food and good secondhand clothing. 4. See the canals by boat, but not with one of the commercial canal boats. In the 'standard' canal boats you'll sit with many other tourists and you'll get a standard talk from a bored guy about the city. A much better option is to rent a small canalboat with a skipper included who can tell you nice and original stories about the city.
