Playing poker for a living

By Paul Debijlen

In 2007, I played poker professionaly for a year long. Many people around me had their thoughts about it. Some find it cool, others ridiculous. I want to tell you in short what's it like and how it was for me.

In general, the year was great for me. Before I started playing full-time I had sharpened my skills during college. I became pretty good and almost every month I finished with nice profits.

The downside is the losses that can occur. Sometimes you can lose thousands of dollars in a few hours and that can be difficult and stressful. On the other hand you also get used to big wins, so your perception of money changes.

The plus side is obvious. I made an hourly wage that's just ridiculous, worked only 3/4 hours a day on average (I played mainly online poker) and traveled to great places were I played live tournaments.

After a year I got a bit bored and felt that I didn't had the real drive to get better everyday. I quit and started an online business and always looked back with a smile to that period.. :)

This is an awesome story. I'm guessing it got only few stars because nobody believes someone can do this. Is it all true? If so we look forward to more intel with more details. I'm sure there must be plenty of tales to tell. You've lived the dream!

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

Thanks for the comments. Sure it's true! For me it's not that special because here in Holland almost everyone knows a guy who is making a living of online poker. I'll try to write more on this topic later (thinking now of the time I played an invitational tournament in the Playboy Mansion :))

Thank you for sharing this experience, Paul.
There is nothing wrong with spreading one's wings, so long as nobody else is taken down if you fall from the sky.
Keep up the good work.
Best wishes.
Frederick
